A du’a for settling debts

Question

I wanted to know the exact reference for the following narration and is it suitable to quote. Furthermore, is the translation correct?

“A man approached Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu) and declared, I am unable to pay my kitabah (money paid by a slave to his master to secure his freedom), so kindly assist me.

Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said, ‘Should I not teach you some words which Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) taught me? If your debt were to be equivalent to Mount Sir/Sabir, Allah will remit it.’

Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said, ‘Recite

اَللّٰہُمَّ اكْفِنِىْ بِحَلَالِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ وَ اَغْنِنِىْ بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ

O Allah! Make Your halal provision sufficient for me [so that I stay away] from haram. And by Your grace, make me independent of everyone besides You”

Answer

Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration and declared it sound (hasan). Imam Hakim (rahimahullah) has also recorded this narration and has declared it authentic. Hafiz Dhahabi concurs.

(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 3563. Mustadrak Hakim, vol. 1 pg. 538)

The translation as appears above is correct. Also see here.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
