Question

Is this narration authentic?

Avoid lying and evil actions

The Prophet (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Whoever does not give up forged speech and evil actions, Allah does not need his leaving his food and drink.”

Answer

Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu). The Hadith is therefore authentic.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Whoever does not abandon [while fasting] lies and evil actions, Allah does not require him leaving his food and drink.”

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 1903 and 6057)

This Hadith is cautioning against speaking lies and carrying out sins while a person is fasting. It does not mean that a person should leave out fasting or break the fast if he engages in these acts. The objective of fasting is not just to remain hungry and thirsty. Rather, fasting should enable a person to control his desires. Therefore if this objective is not being fulfilled, then there is no point in the fast.

(Fathul Bari, Hadith: 1903)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
