Teaching women to write

Question

There is a Hadith that says don’t teach women ‘kitabat’ (to write). (Al-Mishkat and Abu Dawud)

First of all what did Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) mean by ‘kitabat’? Is it the compilation of books? I read in the explanation of this Hadith in the book ‘Behnon ki Chadar’ by Abu Talha Muhammad Yunus that it means: Do not teach your women how to write.

So, I’d like to know why he said this when there is another Hadith saying the exact opposite, that ‘knowledge is compulsory for every male and female’. So what is the difference between ‘Ilm and ‘kitabat’? Read More »

The different versions of the Tashahhud

Question

Please help me with this question:

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Urwa ibnuz Zubayr from Abdar Rahman ibn Abdal Qari that he heard Umar ibnul Khattab say, while he was teaching people the tashahhud from the mimbar,

“Say, Greetings belong to Allah. Pure actions belong to Allah. Good words and prayers belong to Allah. Peace on you, Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and on the slaves of Allah who are salihun. I testify that there is no god except Allah. And I testify that Muhammad is His slave and His messenger.”

Is it correct? I use to say the same since my childhood but now I noticed it is At-tahiyatulillahi wassalatu watayibatu, can I continue saying az-zakiyatu?

Difference in wording of a du’a in Riyadus Salihin

Question

I came across the following du’a in two places: Tirmidhi (3502) and Riyadus Salihin (834).

Tirmidhi:

Riyadus Salihin:

a) The riwayah of Tirmidhi contains the word مصيبات while the riwayah of Riyadus Salihin (which quotes Tirmidhi) contains مصائب. Which is the correct version?

b) Also the riwayah of Tirmidhi contains و متّعنا while the riwayah of Riyadus Salihin contains اللهم متّعنا. Which is the correct version?
