The masnun method of shaking someone’s hand

Question

I was told that there exists a Hadith wherein mention is made that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) used to give a firm handshake whilst making Musafahah (i.e. shaking hands) [meaning to give it a wedge moving it up and down, as is normally observed in our daily interactions]. Would you be so kind as to please provide the reference? Read More »

Hadith on the weight limit on men’s rings

Question

I have come across two versions of the Hadiths wherein the weight limit on rings for men are mentioned. One version has the wording ولا تزده مثقالا (which our Hanafi ‘Ulama often mention in our Fiqh books) and another says ولا تتمه مثقالا (I have only come across this version in the Hadith books).

Kindly provide me with the authenticity of both. Read More »

Teaching women to write

Question

There is a Hadith that says don’t teach women ‘kitabat’ (to write). (Al-Mishkat and Abu Dawud)

First of all what did Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) mean by ‘kitabat’? Is it the compilation of books? I read in the explanation of this Hadith in the book ‘Behnon ki Chadar’ by Abu Talha Muhammad Yunus that it means: Do not teach your women how to write.

So, I’d like to know why he said this when there is another Hadith saying the exact opposite, that ‘knowledge is compulsory for every male and female’. So what is the difference between ‘Ilm and ‘kitabat’? Read More »

Question

Kindly provide the source and translation of the following du’a:

Five evil practices which brings about destruction

Question

Is this Hadith correct?

Sayyiduna Anas (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, “When my nation adopts five practices, their destruction is inevitable; When they curse each other openly, they wear silk, they take up musical [instruments], they drink wine, and men are satisfied with men and women are satisfied with women.”

A follow up query regarding Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) choosing poverty

Question

Could you provide the source and authenticity of this Hadith?

I saw one site who claim that the Hadith is in Bukhari and another site says says Ahmad. But I haven’t found it in either place. Could you please verify?

On the authority of Abu Umamah who quotes the Prophet as saying: “My Rabb has offered me that He make the valley of Makkah gold for me, but I said: ‘No. I would rather have enough to eat one day and remain hungry one day. Thus, when I am hungry I would turn to You [in earnest supplication] and remember You and when I have my fill, I praise You and give thanks.”
