Exact wording of the du'a when leaving home

Question

The du’a that is read when leaving one’s home,

bismillahi tawakkaltu ‘alallahi wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah

Is the wa before la hawla found in the books of hadith or is it an addition made from the side of people?

Answer

The du’a in question is reported in the following primary Hadith Sources with the words la hawla and not wa la hawla:

1) Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 3426. Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has graded this hadith as authentic.

2) Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 5054,

3) Sunan Nasa’i, Hadith: 9837,

4) Sahih ibn Hibban; Al Ihsan, Hadith: 822,

5) Kitabud Du’a of Imam Tabarani, Hadith: 409

However it seems as though some of the copies of the above books that Imam Nawawi (rahimahullah) had, have the words wa la hawla. Imam Nawawi (rahimahullah) has recorded this hadith in his Riyadus Salihin and Al Azkar with the words wa la hawla .

(Riyadus Salihin, Hadith: 88 and Al Azkar, Hadith: 57)

The ideal would be to read what is found in the primary hadith sources today. ie. la hawla and not wa la hawla.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
