Question

What is the Hadith which mentions when making du’a one should not say ‘O Allah forgive me and have mercy on me if you wish?’

Answer

Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim (rahimahumallah) have recorded this narration on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu). Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“None of you should say, ‘O Allah forgive me if You wish, O Allah have mercy on me if You wish.’ He should be firm in asking for none can force Allah”

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 6339 and Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2679)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
