Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)’s worry and concern for this Ummah

Question

Under the Tafsir of Ayah five of Surah Duha:

ولسوف يعطيك ربك فترضى

The following Hadith is quoted:

لا أرضى و واحد من أمتي في النار

(I will not be pleased even if one of my Ummati is in the Fire)

Can you provide the complete Hadith and it’s authenticity?

Answer

The Hadith in question

As you have stated, certain Mufassirun have mentioned this narration under the commentary of the Ayah, (Your Rabb will soon give you and you will be satisfied).

The full narration which they quote is as follows:

When this verse was revealed, Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“In that case I will not be pleased, even if one from my Ummah is in the Fire”

(Tafsir Qurtubi, Surah Duha, Verse: 5)

However, I have not come across a chain of narrators for this Hadith. The closest narration I could locate is as follows:

Sa’id ibn Jubayr (rahimahullah) says that Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) said regarding the commentary of the verse,

“Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)’s happiness is that his entire Ummah enter Jannah”

(Shu’abul Iman, Hadith: 1374 with a weak chain. Also see Ad Durrul Manthur, Surah Duha, Verse: 5)

This is the Tafsir of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) and should be quoted as such.

A similar narration

Imam Muslim (rahimahullah) has recorded a narration in his Sahih which in essence has the same meaning as the Hadith in question. This narration is as follows:

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibnul ‘As says that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) recited the verse wherein Ibrahim (‘alayhis salam) said:

‘ رب إنهن أضللن كثيرا من الناس فمن تبعني فإنه مني ‘

(My Rabb! They (These idols) have misled many people. So whosoever will follow me, then he is certainly from me) -Surah Ibrahim, Verse: 36-

and Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), recited the Verse wherein ‘Isa (‘alayhis salam) said:

‘إن تعذبهم فإنهم عبادك و إن تغفر لهم فإنك أنت العزيز الحكيم ‘

(If You punish them, then they are Your slaves, and if you forgive them, then surely You are the Mighty the Wise) -Surah Al Maidah, Verse: 118)

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) then raised his hands and said, ‘O Allah, My Ummah O Allah My Ummah. Allah Ta’ala then said, ‘O Jibril! Go to Muhammad -and your Rabb knows fully well- and ask him, ‘What makes you weep’?

So Jibril (‘alayhis salam) came to Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and asked him. Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) informed him of what he had said  -and your Rabb knows fully well-. Allah Ta’ala then said to Jibril, ‘O Jibril! Go to Muhammad and say to him, Verily we will please you with regard to your Ummah [by saving them from punishment] and we would not displease you”

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 202)

‘Allamah Nawawi (rahimahullah) says, ‘This Hadith is from those which give the most hope to this Ummah and fits with the verse ‘ولسوف يعطيك ربك فترضى’  (Surah Duha, Verse: 5)

(Al Minhaj, Hadith: 498)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
