Praising Allah Ta’ala when one becomes ill and not complaining

Question

Could you confirm the source of this Hadith?

Answer

This narration is recorded in Muwatta Imam Malik and Shu’abul Iman of Imam Bayhaqi, on the authority of ‘Ata ibn Yasar (rahimahullah), mursalan.

(Muwatta Imam Malik, Hadith: 2711, Shu’abul Iman, Hadith: 9471)

Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahullah) has recorded other versions as well, and has declared one version authentic.

Translation

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“When a person becomes ill, Allah Ta’ala sends two angels to him and says ‘See what he says to those who come to visit him. If he praises Allah when people come to visit him, the angels go to inform Allah -although Allah Knows very well-. Allah Ta’ala then says, ‘I take it upon Myself that if I cause him to pass away, I will grant him entry into Jannah, and if I cure him, I will replace him with better flesh, better blood and I will erase his sins.'”

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
