Is this Hadith authentic?

أفضل الأعمال ما أكرهت عليه النفوس

 

Answer

Imam Abu Bakr ibn Abid Dunya (rahimahullah) has recorded this as the statement of ‘Umar ibn ‘Abdil ‘Aziz (rahimahullah).

(Muhasabatun Nafs, Hadith: 113)

‘Allamah ‘Iraqi (rahimahullah) has stated that he has not come across this as a Hadith of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).

(Al Mughni ‘An Hamlil Asfar, Hadith: 3676)

Translation

The best actions are those which the nafs is forced to carry out/dislikes doing.

(١١٣) – حدثني سلمة بن شبيب، عن سهيل بن عاصم، عن أبي ربيعة، قال: قال عمر بن عبد العزيز: «أفضل الأعمال ما أكرهت عليه النفوس».

المغني عن حمل الأسفار:
(٣٦٧٦) – حديث: «أفضل الأعمال ما أكرهت عليه النفوس» لا أصل له مرفوعاً وإنما هو من قول عمر بن عبد العزيز هكذا رواه ابن أبي الدنيا في كتاب محاسبة النفس.
