Question

I came across these du’as for memorisation:

 اللّٰهُمَّ انْفَعْنِي بِمَا عَلَّمْـتَنِي وَ عَلِّمْنِي مَا يَنْفَعُنِي اللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ فَهْمَ النَّبِيِّينَ وَ حِفْظَ المُرْسَلِينَ لمُقَرَّبِينَ اللّٰهُمَّ اجْعَلْ لِسَانِي عَامِرًا بِذِكْرِكَ وَ قَلْبِي بِخَشْيَتِك.إِنَّكَ عَلَى مَا تَشَاءُ قَدِيرٌ وَ أَنْتَ حَسْـبُنَا وَ نِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ

After Studying:

اللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَوْدِعُكَ مَا قَرأتُ وَمَا حَفَظْتُ، فَرُضُهُ عَليّ عِنْدَ حَاجَتِي إِلَيهِ، إِنّكَ عَلى مَا تَشَاءُ قَدِيرُ وَأَنْتَ حَسْبِي وَنِعْمَ الوَكِيل

Please provide reference or any other du’as from Hadith for memorisation esp. Hifz.

Answer

The scholars have enlisted many practices for boosting the memory, however most of these practices are based on experience and are not from the hadith. There is no harm in practicing upon these as long as one is aware of the above.

The du’as you cited also seem to be from someone’s experience.

1. Al-Mughirah ibn Subai’- a student of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu ’anhu)- says: “Whoever will recite the following ten verses before sleeping will never forget the Quran; first four verses of Surah Baqarah, Ayatul-kursi, with the two verses that follow it and the last three verses of Surah Baqarah. (Sunan Darimi, Hadith: 3650)

2. My Honourable teacher, Al-Muhaddith Muhammad ‘Awwamah (may Allah protect him) usually recommends the following salat on Nabi (sallalahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) to be recited frequently daily between Maghrib and ‘Isha Salah:

“Allahumma salli wa sallim wa barik ‘ala sayyidina Muhammadiw wa alihi kama la nihayata likamalika wa ‘adada kamalih”

سنن الدارمي:
(٣٦٥٠) – حدثنا إسحاق بن عيسى عن أبي الأحوص عن أبي سنان عن المغيرة بن سبيع وكان من أصحاب عبد الله قال: من قرأ عشر آيات من البقرة عند منامه لم ينس القرآن أربع آيات من أولها وأية الكرسي وآيتان بعدها وثلاث من آخرها قال إسحاق لم ينس ما قد حفظه قال أبو محمد منهم من يقول المغيرة بن سميع.
