Question

Kindly provide a reference for the following Masnun du’a:

“O Allah, wash off my sins with the [melted] water of ice and snow, and purify my heart of sins, just as white clothes are cleansed of filth.”

 

Answer

Imam Nasai (rahimahullah) has recorded the following Hadith on the authority of Sayyidah ‘Aishah (radiyallahu ‘anha) who says:

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would say, “Allahummaghsil khatayaya bi ma-ith thalji wal baradi wa naqqi qalbi minal khataya kama naqqaytath thawbal abyada minad danas”

(Sunan Nasai, Al Mujtaba, Hadith: 333)

The Arabic text of the du’a is as follows:

اللّٰهُمَّ اغْسِلْ خَطَايَاىَ بِمَاءِ الثَّلْجِ وَالْبَرَدِ وَنَقِّ قَلْبِي مِنَ الْخَطَايَا كَمَا نَقَّيْتَ الثَّوْبَ الأَبْيَضَ مِنَ الدَّنَسِ

Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim (rahimahumallah) have also recorded this du’a in a lengthier narration which comprises of other du’as as well.

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 6368 and Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2705)

Note

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) had also recited a similar du’a in Janazah Salah as recorded by Imam Muslim (rahimahullah).
