Question

What is the authenticity of this Hadith?

“Islam consists of eight portions; Islam, Salah, Zakah, Fasting, Hajj, Enjoining good, Prohibiting evil and Jihad in the path of Allah. Certainly one who does not [hold on] to one share is at a loss”

Answer

Imam Bazzar (rahimahullah) has recorded this as a Hadith of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) on the authority of Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

Hafiz Haythami (rahimahullah) states that there is a narrator in this chain whose credibility is debated; he has been deemed reliable by some Muhaddithun and weak according to others.

(Musnad Bazzar; Kashful Astar, Hadith: 336, Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 1, pg. 38)

Imam Bazzar and others have also recorded this narration as the statement of Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) with a reliable chain. Imam Daraqutni, ‘Allamah Mundhiri (rahimahumallah) and others are of the view that this version is more correct.

(Musnad Bazzar, Kashful Astar, Hadith: 337, Targhib, vol. 1, pg. 518/519)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
