Question

I have read a narration where the Buraq misbehaved when Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) was about to mount it. Jibril (‘alayhis salam) reprimanded it and said something to the effect ‘Are you doing this to Muhammad (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)?’

What is the correct wording and verification?

 

Answer

Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration and has declared the Hadith sound (hasanun gharib).

The full text is as follows:

Sayyiduna Anas (radiyallahu ‘anhu) says, ‘On the night of Mi’raj, the Buraq was brought to Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), reined and saddled. The Buraq became stubborn and difficult for Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) to control. Jibril (‘alayhis salam) said, ‘Are you doing this to Muhammad (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)? None more noble in the sight of Allah has mounted you before.’ The Buraq then began to sweat profusely [calmed down and became submissive].

(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 3131)

Imam Ibn Hibban (rahimahullah) has also recorded this narration with slight variation in the wording.

(٣١٣١) – حدثنا إسحاق بن منصور قال: أخبرنا عبد الرزاق قال: أخبرنا معمر، عن قتادة، عن أنس «أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أتي بالبراق ليلة أسري به ملجما مسرجا، فاستصعب عليه، فقال له جبريل: أبمحمد تفعل هذا؟ فما ركبك أحد أكرم على الله منه»، قال: «فارفض عرقا»: «هذا حديث حسن غريب، ولا نعرفه إلا من حديث عبد الرزاق».

صحيح ابن حبان:
(٤٦) – أخبرنا محمد بن عبد الرحمن بن العباس السامي، حدثنا أحمد بن حنبل، حدثنا عبد الرزاق، أنبأنا معمر، عن قتادة، عن أنس، أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: «أتي بالبراق ليلة  أسري به مسرجا ملجما ليركبه، فاستصعب عليه، فقال له جبريل: ما يحملك على هذا، فوالله ما ركبك أحد أكرم على الله منه. قال: فارفض عرقا».
