What is the reference for this incident?

Luqman the wise was insulted regarding his looks. He replied:

أتعيب بهذا على النقش أم على النقاش؟

Answer

This is cited in later, non-primary sources like Sharh Maqamat al Hariri and Tafsir Ruhul Bayan. I have not come across it in any primary source.

A person once told Luqman al Hakim, “You lack physical beauty!” He replied, “Are you criticising the design or the designer [i.e. Allah Ta’ala].”
