Question
What is the authenticity of the following narration?
Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:
“The one who restricts the sustenance of his family, although he has the means to provide is not from us”
Answer
Qadhi Al Quda’i (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration in Musnadush Shihab, with an extremely weak chain.
(Musnadush Shihab, vol. 2 pg. 205. Refer: Al Kamil, vol. 10 pg. 515, Lisanul Mizan, vol.8 pg. 445 -8464- and Fathul Wahhab of Ahmad Siddiq Al Ghumari, vol. 2 pg. 268)
Imam Daylami (rahimahullah) has recorded a similar narration via a narrator who has been declared as weak according to some Muhaddithun and very weak according to others.
(Musnadul Firdaws. Refer: Mizanul I’tidal, vol. 3 pg. 266 -6025-)
However numerous Hadiths and Verses of the Holy Quran have instructions to spend on one’s family. Allah Ta’ala says:
“The wealthy person should spend and pay maintenance according to his means. As for the one whose means are restricted, he should spend from what Allah has given him” [as much as he can afford]
(Surah Talaq, verse: 7)
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:
“Your wives have a right over you that you provide sustenance and clothing for them kindly” [without being miserly]
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 1218)
And Allah Ta’ala Knows best
