Question

I have heard the following appears in the Torah. What is the reference?

“O son of Adam, be mindful of your Rabb, honour your parents, and maintain your ties of kinship; I shall extend your lifespan, facilitate ease for you, and avert hardship from you.”

Answer

Imam Abu Nu’aym (rahimahullah) has recorded this as the statement of the reliable Tabi’i, Muhammad ibnul Munkadir (rahimahullah).

Muhammad ibnul Munkadir (rahimahullah) said: “It is said that the following appears in the Tawrah, ‘O Son of Adam, fear your Rabb, be dutiful to your parents and join family ties, I [Allah] shall increase your lifespan, facilitate ease for you, and avert hardship from you.'”

(Hilyatul Awliya, vol. 3, pg. 150. Also see: Al Matalibul ‘Aliyah, Hadith: 3308 and Tanzihush Shari’ah, vol. 1, pg. 214)

Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim (rahimahumallah) have recorded the following words as a Hadith of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam):

“Whoever wishes to have his provision increased or his life lengthened should maintain ties of kinship.”
