Question

Sayyidah ‘Aishah (radiyallahu ‘anha) would not ask if a boy or girl was born. She would ask if the baby was born healthy.

Is there a narration like this?

Answer

Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration in Al Adabul Mufrad. The chain could be declared sound (hasan).

Kathir ibn ‘Ubayd (rahimahullah) reported: “When a child was born in the household of ‘Aishah (radiyallahu ‘anha) she would not ask if it was a boy or girl. Instead, she would ask, “Is the child [healthy]?” When they would respond in the affirmative, she would say, “Alhamdu lillahi Rabbil ‘alamin” (All praise be to Allah, the Rabb of the worlds).”
