Question

Is this a Hadith or statement of a the Sahabi (radiyallahu ‘anhu)?

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (radiyallahu ‘anhu): “Recite the Quran and do not be deceived [by depending] on the written copies. Verily Allah will never punish a heart that has memorised the Quran”

Answer

Imam Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration as the statement of Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

(Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah: 35877)

The second part of the narration “Allah will never punish a heart that has memorised the Quran”, will be understood as Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) having heard this from Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) as the nature of this is not such that he could have made up applying his own logic (مرفوع حكما).
