Question

Kindly provide the reference, authenticity, and translation of the following narration:

Answer

Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

(Al-Mu’jamul Kabir, Hadith: 7895)

‘Allamah Haythami (rahimahullah) has pointed out a weak narrator in the chain.

(Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 8, pg. 15)

Nonetheless, this narration will gain strength through corroborating narrations and is suitable to quote.

(See: Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 1920-1921, Musnad Ahmad, vol. 5, pg. 323, Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 1, pg. 127, and Here)

Translation

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) has narrated:

“Whilst Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) was with Abu Bakr, ‘Umar, and Abu ‘Ubaydah ibnul Jarrah [radiyallahu ‘anhum] amongst a group of his companions, a bowl containing a drink was suddenly brought. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) handed it over to Abu ‘Ubaydah [radiyallahu ‘anhu].

Abu ‘Ubaydah then said: “You are more worthy of [drinking] it [first], O Prophet of Allah!”

He [i.e., Nabi – sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam] replied: “Take it.”

Abu ‘Ubaydah [radiyallahu ‘anhu] then took the bowl.

Thereafter, before drinking, he said to him [i.e., Nabi – sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam]: “Take [it], O Prophet of Allah!”

The Prophet of Allah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) replied: “Drink, for indeed barakah [blessings] is/lies within our seniors; he who does not have mercy on our children, and does not respect our elders, is not from amongst us.”

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
