What is the reference for this narration?

When Hasan Basri (rahimahullah) came across a group of people arguing, he would say:

“By Allah, these ones have become bored of worship, speaking has become easy for them, and their piety has diminished, and that is why they talk and argue so easily.”

Answer

This narration is recorded in Kitabuz Zuhd of Imam Ahmad and Hilyatul Awliya.

Hasan Basri (rahimahullah) once entered the Masjid accompanied by Farqad, and sat next to a gathering where people were discussing/arguing. He listened to their discussion, then addressed Farqad, saying: “O Farqad, I swear by Allah, these are merely people who became bored with ‘ibadah, found speech more convenient for themselves than ‘ibadah, and as their piety has decreased, so they resorted to talking/arguing.”

(١٥٤٦) – حدثنا عبد الله، حدثنا أبي، حدثنا فياض بن محمد، حدثنا بعض، أصحابنا يكنى أبا أيوب قال: دخل الحسن المسجد ومعه فرقد فقعد إلى جنب حلقة يتكلمون فنصت لحديثهم قال: ثم أقبل على فرقد فقال: يا فرقد، والله ما هؤلاء إلا قوم ملوا العبادة ووجدوا الكلام أهون عليهم من العمل وقل ورعهم فتكلموا.
