Is laughing in the Masjid a cause of darkness in the grave?

Question

What is status of following Hadith and can it be quoted?

“Laughing in the Masjid is a means of darkness in the grave”

Answer

Imam Daylami (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith with an extremely weak chain.

(Musnadul Firdaws, Hadith: 3891. Refer: Al Kamil, vol. 8 pg. 68, Lisanul Mizan, vol. 5 pg. 394 -number: 5132-, Al Mudawi, vol. 4 pg. 285 (5231/2184) and Al Mughir of Ahmad Siddiq Al Ghumari)

On the contrary, there are authentic narrations which suggest that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and the Sahabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum) would sometimes smile and laugh in the Masjid when discussing the days of Jahiliyyah.

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2322)

However, the above should not be used to justify uncontrolled laughter in the Masjid.

The Masjid is after all the house of Allah Ta’ala and the sanctity of the Masjid should not be violated. The Fuqaha have permitted some type of permissible talk in the Masjid. Kindly refer to a reputable Mufti/Darul Ifta for further clarification.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
