Question
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) has said: “Whoever does not take from his moustache [i.e., trim/shave it], then he is not from us.”
(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 2761)
I have heard that the reasoning for this was because a long, luxurious moustache was a sign of arrogance. Is there any evidence supporting this assertion?
Answer
The ‘Ulama have mentioned that long moustaches were a salient feature of non-believers, especially the fire-worshippers.
(Refer: Fathul Bari, Hadith: 5889, and Al-Kawkabud Durri, Hadith: 2761; Also see: Wujubu I’ifail Lihyah, pg. 79 onwards)
I have not come across the explanation in question in the famous commentaries available to me.
And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
