Question
What is the source and grading of the narration wherein someone addresses Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) by using the words “O the best of mankind” and Nabi (sallalahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) replies “Rather, that is Ibrahim -‘alayhis salam-“.
Answer
Imam Muslim (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration in his Sahih (2369). The narration is therefore authentic.
The Muhaddithun explain that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) had said this out of humility and respect for Sayyiduna Ibrahim (‘alayhis salam) as Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) himself has declared “I am the leader of all of the children of Adam, without being boastful about this”
(Refer: Sahih Muslim with commentary of ‘Allamah Nawawi -rahimahullah-, Hadith: 6090)
