Question
The incident where Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) made du’a for either one of them, Abu Jahl and ‘Umar, to accept Islam, and it turned out to be ‘Umar who accepted. Is this in Ibn Ishaq or from Hadith? If it is a Hadith can you share the source, grading, and actual text.
Answer
Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah Ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu’anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) made the following du’a:
O Allah, strengthen Islam with the one who is more beloved to you from: Abu Jahl and ‘Umar’
Ibn ‘Umar says: It turned out that ‘Umar was more beloved to Allah Ta’ala.
(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 3681 & Sahih Ibn Hibban, – Al-Ihsan- Hadith: 6881)
In addition to Imam Ibn Hibban (rahimahullah), Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has also declared this Hadith as authentic (hasan sahih)
And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
