Question
What is the reference of this du’a?
[Allahumma inni] ‘as-aluka hubbaka wa hubba may yuhibbuka wa hubba ‘amalin yuqarribu ila hubbika
Answer
This du’a of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) is recorded in Sunan Tirmidhi on the authority of Sayyiduna Mu’adh ibn Jabal (radiyallahu ‘anhu) as part of a longer du’a and narration.
The part in question is as follows:
وَأَسْأَلُكَ حُبَّكَ وَحُبَّ مَنْ يُحِبُّكَ، وَحُبَّ عَمَلٍ يُقَرِّبُ إِلَى حُبِّكَ
Wa as-aluka hubbaka wa hubba may yuhibbuka wa hubba ‘amalin yuqarribu ila hubbika
Translation: And I ask You for Your love, the love of whoever You love and the love of the deeds that will bring [one] near to Your love
(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 3235)
Nabi Dawud (‘alayhis salam) would also recite a similar du’a. See here
And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
