What is the authenticity of the following Hadith?

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘Renew your Iman.’ It was said, ‘O Rasulullah! How should we renew our Iman?’ He replied, ‘Excessively repeat La ilaha illallah‘

 

Answer

Imam Ahmad, Imam Hakim (rahimahumallah) and others have recorded this narration on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

‘Allamah Mundhiri (rahimahullah) has declared the chain of Imam Ahmad sound (hasan) and ‘Allamah Haythami (rahimahullah) has declared the narrators reliable.

(Targhib, vol. 2 pg. 415 and Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 10 pg. 82)
