Saying salam when departing

Question

Making Salam when entering home and meeting people is established. Is salam when leaving home, leaving i.e. departing from people also established?

Answer

I haven’t come accross a clear Hadith on this, but salam when departing could be proven from the practice of Nabi Ibrahim (‘alahis salam). When he was departing his hometown, he said to them: Peace (salam) be upon you.

(Surah Maryam, verse: 47)

The Commentators of Quran have mentioned -among other explanations- that this could have possibly been the salam (that is usually done) for farewell.

(Tafsir Qurtubi, Ibn Kathir, Ma’ariful Quran, Surah Maryam, verse: 47)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
