Is this narration authentic?

الصحابة رضوان الله عليهم تذاكروا القرآن فقال أبو بكر الصديق رضي الله عنه: قرأت القرآن من أوله إلى آخره فلم أر فيه آية أرجى وأحسن من قوله تبارك وتعالى: قل كل يعمل على شاكلته فإنه لا يشاكل بالعبد إلا العصيان ولا يشاكل بالرب إلا الغفران. وقال عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه: قرأت القرآن من أوله إلى آخره فلم أرى فيه آية أرجى وأحسن من قوله تعالى: بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم. حم. تنزيل الكتاب من الله العزيز العليم. غافر الذنب وقابل التوب شديد العقاب ذي الطول.

 

Answer

Imam Qurtubi (rahimahullah) has cited this in his Tafsir. I have not come across this in any primary Hadith source, nor have I come across a grading from a Muhaddith of the past. I am therefore unable to confirm its authenticity.

He writes: “It has been reported that the Sahabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum) were once discussing the Quran. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr As Siddiq (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said: ‘I read the Quran from beginning to end and did not find any verse more hopeful or more beautiful than:

قُلْ كُلٌّ يَعْمَلُ عَلىٰ شَاكِلَتِهِ

“Say: Each person acts according to his disposition.”

For nothing is more fitting to the servant than falling into disobedience, and nothing is more fitting to the Rabb than forgiveness.’

Sayyiduna ‘Umar ibn Al-Khattab (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said: ‘I read the Quran from beginning to end and did not find any verse more hopeful or more beautiful than:

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيمِ. حم. تَنْزِيلُ الْكِتابِ مِنَ اللهِ الْعَزِيزِ الْعَلِيمِ. غافِرِ الذَّنْبِ وَقابِلِ التَّوْبِ شَدِيدِ الْعِقابِ ذِي الطَّوْلِ

“In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Ha Mim. The revelation of the Book is from Allah, the Mighty, the All-Knowing,
the Forgiver of sin, the Accepter of repentance, severe in punishment, the Possessor of bounty.”

He mentioned forgiveness before acceptance of repentance, and in this is a subtle indication for the believers.’

Sayyiduna ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said: ‘I read the entire Quran from beginning to end and did not find any verse more hopeful or more beautiful than:

نَبِّئْ عِبَادِي أَنِّي أَنَا الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ

“Inform My servants that I am indeed the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.”‘

Sayyiduna ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said: ‘I read the Quran from beginning to end and did not find any verse more hopeful or more beautiful than:

قُلْ يَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَىٰ أَنْفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا مِنْ رَّحْمَةِ اللهِ ۚ إِنَّ اللهَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا ۚ إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ

“Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. He is indeed the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.”‘

Imam Qurtubi (rahimahullah) then adds: ‘I too read the Quran from beginning to end and did not find any verse more hopeful or more beautiful than:

الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَلَمْ يَلْبِسُوا إِيمَانَهُم بِظُلْمٍ أُولَٰئِكَ لَهُمُ الْأَمْنُ وَهُم مُّهْتَدُونَ

“Those who believed and did not mix their faith with wrongdoing, it is they who shall have security, and it is they who are rightly guided.”‘”

(Tafsir Qurtubi, Surah Al Isra, Verse: 84)
