Question

Is the narrator, Jarir ibn Ayyub Al-Bajaly acceptable?

He has narrated Hadith in Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah, Hadith no. 1886.

Answer

Jarir ibn Ayyub is declared unreliable by the Masters of the field, like Imams: Ibn Ma’in, Bukhari, Nasai and others (rahimahumullah).

In fact, ‘Allamah Dhahabi (rahimahullah) begins his biography with the words: “Famously weak” (مشهور بالضعف).

(Mizanul i’tidal, no. 1459. Also see Al-Kamil of Ibn ‘Adiy, no. 330)

Further, even Imam Ibn Khuzaymah (rahimahullah) has expressed his reservation in the narrator with the words إن صح الخبر، فإن في القبل من جرير بن أيوب البجلي.

This is Imam Ibn Khuzaymah’s way of excluding a Hadith from being declared authentic (sahih).

It is incorrect to deem Hadiths like these as being authentic (sahih) according to Imam Ibn Khuzaymah (rahimahullah).
