Question

It is reported that ‘Umar ibn ‘Abdil ‘Aziz (rahimahullah) wrote to his governor in Basrah:

“Take special care of four nights in the year, for Allah pours His mercy abundantly on these nights: the first night of Rajab, the middle night of Sha’ban, the night of ‘Eid al-Fitr, and the night of Eid al-Adha.”

Is this correct?

This narration is recorded in Kitabut Targhib wat Tarhib of Abul Qasim Al Asbahani (rahimahullah).

Zuhri (rahimahullah) reports that ‘Umar ibn ‘Abdil ‘Aziz (rahimahullah) wrote to ‘Adiy ibn Artah, his governor in Basrah: “Pay special attention to four nights of the year, for Allah ‘Azza wa Jalla  showers His mercy abundantly during them; The first night of Rajab, the middle night of Sha’ban, the night of ‘Eid al-Fitr, and the night of Eid al-Adha.”

Hafiz Ibn Rajab Al Hambali (rahimahullah) has expressed reservation regarding the authenticity.

Nevertheless, similar narrations have been recorded as the statements of Imam Shafi’i (rahimahullah) and Khalid ibn Ma’dan (rahimahullah). These versions should be quoted instead. See here and here.

(١٨٥١) – أخبرنا عبد الواحد بن علي بن فهد ببغداد، أنبأ أبو الفتح بن أبي الفوارس، ثنا عمر بن أحمد الوراق، ثنا محمد بن هارون بن عبد الله، ثنا محمد بن يحيى الأزدي، ثنا محمد بن هانئ، ثنا عبد الله بن أبي سباق، عن الزهري قال: كتب عمر بن عبد العزيز إلى عدي بن أرطأة وهو عامله على البصرة: أن عليك بأربع ليالٍ من السنة، فإن الله -عز وجل- يفرغ فيهن الرحمة إفراغاً، أول ليلة من رجب، وليلة النصف من شعبان، وليلة الفطر، وليلة الأضحى.

وقد روي عن عمر بن عبد العزيز أنه كتب إلى عامله بالبصرة: عليك بأربع ليال من السنة فإن الله يفرغ فيهن الرحمة إفراغا أول ليلة من رجب وليلة النصف من شعبان وليلة الفطر وليلة الأضحى. وفي صحته عنه نظر.
