What is the authenticity of the following narration?

ليس شيء يقربكم من الجنة ويباعدكم من النار إلا أمرتكم به

 

Answer

This narration has been recorded in several Hadith collections with variations in the wording. Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) has recorded the following words on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (radiyallahu ‘anhu):

“…There is no [deed] which will take you closer to Jannah and distance you from Jahannam except that I have ordered you [to carry it out]”

(Al Mu’jamul Kabir, Hadith: 1647. Also see: Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 35473, Mustadrak Hakim, vol. 2 pg, 4 and Al Matalibul ‘Aliyah, Hadith: 927)

 

Hafiz Haythami (rahimahullah) has declared the chain of narrators of Imam Tabarani reliable.
