Question
I read in Ihya ‘Ulumid Din that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would comb his beard twice daily. Is this correct?
Answer
‘Allamah Subki (rahimahullah) has cited this narration under those narrations he has not found any basis/source for. ‘Allamah ‘Iraqi (rahimahullah) has also mentioned that he has not come across any chain for this narration.
(Tabaqatush Shafi’iyyah, vol. 6 pg. 293, Faydul Qadir, Hadith: 9377, Mirqatul Mafatih, Hadith: 4445 and Tuhfatul Ahwadhi, Hadith: 1756)
‘Allamah ‘Iraqi (rahimahullah) has cited another narration which states that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would comb his hair frequently. This narration does not specify any specific number of times.
(Refer: Sharhus Sunnah, Hadith: 3164 and Al Mughni ‘An Hamlil Asfar, Hadith: 328)
In general, the hair should be combed as per need. A Muslim ought to be neat and tidy at all times, but without any type of such obsession.
