Question

Kindly verify the authenticity of this Hadith:

“The sign between us and the hypocrites is that they do not drink Zam Zam water to their fill”

Answer

Imam Ibn Majah (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith. The full narration is as follows:

Muhammad ibn ‘Abdir Rahman ibn Abi Bakr says, “I was sitting with ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) when a person came up to him. ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas asked, ‘Where have you come from’? He said, ‘From Zam Zam.’ ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) asked, ‘Did you drink from it as you ought to have drunk?’ He asked, ‘And how is that?’ ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) said,

‘When you drink from it, then face the Ka’bah and take the name of Allah, drink in three sips and drink to your fill. When you have finished, then praise Allah for Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

‘The sign [that differentiates] between us and the hypocrites is that they do not drink Zam Zam to their fill.”

‘Allamah Busiri (rahimahullah) has declared the chain of narrators reliable.

(Zawaid Ibn Majah, Hadith: 1008)
