Sayyidah ‘Aishah (radiyallahu ‘anha) said [regarding Rasulullah -sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam-]:

“The people had exhausted him.”

And please share the background to this if it is authentic

This is authentic.

The full narration is as follows:

The Tabi’i; ‘Abdullah ibn Shaqiq (rahimahullah) asked Sayyidatuna ‘Aishah (radiyallahu ‘anha): “Would Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) offer [nafl] Salah while seated?”

She replied: “Yes after the people exhausted him.” [i.e., He (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) after growing old, became exhausted and over-burdened with their needs and worry for the people].

(١٧٠٥) – حدثنا قتيبة بن سعيد، حدثنا حماد، عن بديل، وأيوب، عن عبد الله بن شقيق، عن عائشة، قالت: «كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يصلي ليلا طويلا، فإذا صلى قائما ركع قائما، وإذا صلى قاعدا ركع قاعدا».

مصنف ابن أبي شيبة:
(٣٦٣٧) – حدثنا أبو أسامة، عن كهمس، عن عبد الله بن شقيق، قال: سألت عائشة: أكان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يصلي قاعدا؟ قالت: بعد ما حطمته السن.
