Question

I studied that some opinions said that the number of mutawatir Hadith must be 313 to match that of the people of Badr but I tried to look for who exactly said this and I could not find an answer. Ibn Taymiyyah and ‘Ali Qari mentioned the opinion by generically saying “And some said” without mentioning who.

Can you please inform me as to who it was that specifically that held this opinion and a reference would be appreciated.

Answer

From what Mulla ‘Ali Qari (rahimahullah) has written, it is possible to understand that this was the opinion of Imamul Haramayn, (rahimahullah). However, because of the ambiguity in Mulla ‘Ali Qari’s words, one would need to see Imamul Haramayn’s wording itself to fully understand this, and then attribute it to him.

(Sharhu Sharhin Nukhbah, pg.166)

Besides this, I have not seen any other attribution of this view to a specific authority.

Update (30/03/17):

After seeing Imamul Haramayn’s words, in his book: Al-Burhan (vol. 1, pg. 217) it is clear that he was not the proponent of this view.

Therefore, at this stage I am unaware of who actually had this view.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
