Question

Is this Hadith authentic?

يذهب الصالحون، الأول فالأول، ويبقى حفالة كحفالة الشعير، أو التمر، لا يباليهم الله بالة

Answer

Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna Mirdas Al Aslami (radiyallahu ‘anhu). The Hadith is therefore authentic.

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 6434. Also see Hadith: 4156)

Ibn Battal (rahimahullah) says, “This Hadith proves that the passing away of the pious is a sign of Qiyamah…”

(Fathul Bari, Hadith: 6434)

Translation

The righteous will pass away, one by one until only the dregs remain like the dregs/husks of barley or dates and Allah will not show any concern about them at all.

Disclaimer: In principle, the signs of Qiyamah are ambiguous and nuanced and only Allah Ta’ala Knows their precise timing and exact application. One should certainly take heed from such Hadiths and signs, despite their application to specific events being open to interpretation.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
