Translation of part of a Hadith regarding what to recite before retiring to bed

Question

What is the translation of اخذ in the following Hadith?

إذا أخذتما مضاجعكما أن تكبرا الله أربعا وثلاثين

Answer

Translation

When you take to your bed [When you go to bed] then recite….

The words ‘إذا أويتما‘ appear in one version of Sahih Bukhari, which means when you retire [to bed]

This is part of the Hadith wherein Sayyidah Fatimah (radiyallahu ‘anha) requested an assistant from Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam). Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) offered her something more virtuous than an assistant, i.e. to recite Subhanallah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times and Allahu Akbar 34 times before sleeping.

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 3113, 6318 and Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2727)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
