Question

Is it authentic that a Jewish woman poisoned Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)? Why did Allah Ta’ala allow this to happen to His beloved Nabi?

Answer

Yes, this incident is authentic. Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim (rahimahumallah) have recorded it.

Sayyiduna Anas (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports:

“A Jewish woman brought a poisoned sheep to Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), and he ate some of it.”

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 2617; Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2190)

Explanation

As believers, we accept the decisions and decrees of Allah Ta’ala. In His infinite wisdom, Allah allows certain things to happen which we may not fully understand. Our knowledge is limited, and we may not know the wisdom behind every decree of Allah Ta’ala.

Nevertheless, the commentators have given the following explanations:

1) Allah Ta’ala wanted Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) to attain the additional honour of martyrdom.
Ibn Battal (rahimahullah), quotes al-Muhallab (rahimahullah) who explains that Allah Ta’ala initially protected Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) from the poison’s fatal effects. When his appointed time of death approached, its effects intensified. Allah Ta’ala intended to grant him martyrdom through that meal.

Allamah Munawi (rahimahullah) similarly explains that this was so that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would have the honour of martyrdom in addition to prophethood.

Sayyidah ‘Aishah (radiyallahu ‘anha) also reports that during his final illness, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) mentioned that he still felt the pain caused by the food he had eaten at Khaybar.

(Sharh Sahihil Bukhari of Imam Ibn Battal, vol. 5, pg. 347, Faydul Qadir, Hadith: 7915 and Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 4428)

2) Imam Nawawi (rahimahullah) explains that this incident also contained a miracle. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) survived poison which proved fatal to another person, and Allah Ta’ala informed him that the meat was poisoned.
His survival at that time was therefore a sign of Allah Ta’ala’s protection. This does not mean that he experienced no pain or that the poison could have no later effect.

(Sahih Muslim with Al Minhaj, Hadith: 5669)

A Further Point to Remember

Being beloved to Allah Ta’ala does not mean that a person will be spared hardship. In fact, the Ambiya (‘alayhimus salam) underwent the severest trials.
Sayyiduna Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas (radiyallahu ‘anhu) once asked Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), “Which people are tested most severely? Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) replied, ‘The Ambiya…'”

(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 2398. See here)

Mulla ‘Ali Qari (rahimahullah) mentions that among the wisdoms behind the trials of the Ambiya is that, had they been spared all trials, people might have mistakenly attributed divinity to them. Furthermore, had the Ambiya not undergone trials themselves, their followers would have found it harder to remain patient during their own difficulties.
