Question

In the du’a when entering the home, is the letter lam in the word المولج read with fatha or kasrah?

Answer

One may recite the meem with either a fathah or a dammah as stated by several Muhaddithun and the lam with a fathah, since this is how is was reported in the narration.

Refer to Sharh ibn Raslan on Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 5096, Shaykh ‘Awwamah’s edition of Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 5055 and Al-Futuhatur Rabbaniyyah, vol. 1, pg. 342.

The last reference above also allows a kasrah on the lam [with a fathah on the meem], based on the linguistic pronunciation.

Summary

The famous pronunciation of this word in the du’a is correct. (mawlaji- with a Fathah on the meem as well as the lam)

Here is the full du’a for the benefit of the readers:

اللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَ المَُوْلَِجِ وَخَيْرَ المَُخْرَجِ بِسْمِ اللهِ وَلَجْنَا وَبِسْمِ اللهِ خَرَجْنَا وَعَلَى اللهِ رَبِّنَا تَوَكَّلْنَا

Allahuma ini asaluka khayral mawlaji/mulaji/mawliji  wa khayral makhraji/mukhraji bismillahi walajna wa bismillahi kharajna wa ‘alallahi rabbina tawakkalna
