Question

Please provide the reference of the incident of ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) entering Baytul Maqdis and refusing to read Salah inside a church.

Answer

This incident is cited in Tarikh Ibn Khaldun. I have not come across a chain of narrators for this incident and therefore cannot verify the authenticity.

تاريخ ابن خلدون:
(٤٣٧) – ودخل عمر بن الخطاب بيت المقدس وجاء كنيسة القمامة  فجلس في صحنها، وحان وقت الصلاة فقال للبترك أريد الصلاة، فقال له: صلّ موضعك، فامتنع وصلّى على الدرجة التي على باب الكنيسة منفردا، فلمّا قضى صلاته قال للتبرك لو صليت داخل الكنيسة أخذها المسلمون بعدي وقالوا هنا صلى عمر، وكتب لهم أن لا يجمع على الدرجة للصلاة ولا يؤذن عليها.

صحيح البخاري:
(٤٣٤) – وقال عمر رضي الله عنه: «إنا لا ندخل كنائسكم من أجل التماثيل التي فيها الصور».
