Question

What is the source of this narration?

Sayyiduna Jabir ibn ‘Abdillah (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) said:

“When you fast, then let your hearing, your sight and tongue also fast from speaking lies and carrying out forbidden deeds, and do not cause harm to your servant. When you fasting, you should be dignified and calm. Do not make the day you are not fasting and the day of your fasting the same.”

 

Answer

This statement of Sayyiduna Jabir ibn ‘Abdillah (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) is recorded in Kitabuz Zuhd of Imam ‘Abdullah ibn Al Mubarak, Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah and other Primary sources.

(١٣٠٨) – أخبركم أبو عمر بن حيويه قال: حدثنا يحيى قال: حدثنا الحسين قال: أخبرنا ابن المبارك، قرأه عن ابن جريج قال: قال سليمان بن موسى: قال جابر بن عبد الله: «إذا صمت فليصم سمعك، وبصرك، ولسانك عن الكذب والمحارم، ودع أذى الخادم، وليكن عليك وقار وسكينة يوم صيامك، ولا تجعل يوم فطرك وصومك سواء».

مصنف ابن أبي شيبة:
(٨٩٧٣ حدثنا محمد بن بكر، عن ابن جريج، عن سليمان بن موسى، قال: قال جابر: «إذا صمت فليصم سمعك وبصرك ولسانك عن الكذب والمإثم، ودع أذى الخادم، وليكن عليك وقار وسكينة يوم صيامك، ولا تجعل يوم فطرك ويوم صيامك سواء».
