Question

What is the reference for this narration?

«ما من جرعة أعظم عند الله أجرا من جرعة غيظ كظمها عبد ابتغاء وجه الله»

Answer

Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has recorded these words as the statement of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhuma).

(Al Adabul Mufrad, Hadith: 1318)

Imam Ibn Majah (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith with slight variation in the wording, as a Hadith of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam). The wording of this version is as follows:

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) reports that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “There is no gulp greater in reward than the gulp a person takes when swallowing his anger. He only suppressed it to seek the pleasure of Allah.”

(Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 4189)

The narration therefore, may be quoted as a Hadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).

Translation

There is no gulp that brings greater reward in the sight of Allah, than the gulp a person takes when suppressing his anger seeking the pleasure of Allah.
