Question

Can you please mention the source of this Hadith?

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“Any believer who feeds a hungry believer, Allah will feed him from the fruits of Jannah on the Day of Qiyamah.”

Answer

Imams Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud (rahimahumallah) have recorded this Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Al Khudri (radiyallahu ‘anhu), as part of a longer narration.

(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 2449, Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 1679 with slight variation in the wording. See another part of the Hadith here)

Although Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) states that this is more correctly reported as the statement of Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Al Khudri (radiyallahu ‘anhu), however, the nature of this narration is not such that could be made up using logic. It will therefore be understood that he heard this from Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).

The narration is suitable to quote.

سنن الترمذي:
(٢٤٤٩) – حدثنا محمد بن حاتم المؤدب قال: حدثنا عمار بن محمد، ابن أخت سفيان الثوري قال: حدثنا أبو الجارود الأعمى واسمه زياد بن المنذر الهمداني، عن عطية العوفي، عن أبي سعيد الخدري، قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: «أيما مؤمن أطعم مؤمنا على جوع أطعمه الله يوم القيامة من ثمار الجنة، وأيما مؤمن سقى مؤمنا على ظمإ سقاه الله يوم القيامة من الرحيق المختوم، وأيما مؤمن كسا مؤمنا على عري كساه الله من خضر الجنة»: «هذا حديث غريب وقد روي هذا عن عطية، عن أبي سعيد موقوفا، وهو أصح عندنا وأشبه».

سنن أبي داود:
(١٦٧٩) – حدثنا علي بن الحسين بن إبراهيم بن إشكاب، حدثنا أبو بدر، حدثنا أبو خالد – الذي كان ينزل في بني دالان – عن نبيح، عن أبي سعيد الخدري، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: «أيما مسلم كسا مسلما ثوبا على عري، كساه الله من خضر الجنة، وأيما مسلم أطعم مسلما على جوع، أطعمه الله من ثمار الجنة، وأيما مسلم سقى مسلما على ظمإ، سقاه الله من الرحيق المختوم».
