Question

What is the reference and the Arabic of this du’a?

Imam Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah (rahimahullah) said, “I made Hajj seventy times, and each time I said,
O Rabb! do not let this be my last time! By the seventieth year, I was ashamed to ask this of Allah.” He passed away that following year.

 

Answer

‘Allamah Dhahabi (rahimahullah) has cited this in Tarikhul Islam as well as in Siyaru A’lamin Nubala. He writes:

“Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah (rahimahullah) performed seventy Hajj. On the night of ‘Arafah he would say:

اللّٰهُمَّ لاَ تَجْعَلْهُ آخِرَ العَهدِ مِنْكَ

Allahumma la taj’alhu akhiral ‘ahdi minka

(O Allah! Do not make this the last meeting i.e., Do not make this the last visit)

On the year of his demise, he did not make this du’a and said, “I am ashamed to ask Allah [again].”

وقد حج سفيان سبعين حجة، وكان يقول ليلة الموقف: اللهم لا تجعله آخر العهد منك، فلما كان عام موته لم يقل ذلك، وقال: قد استحييت من الله تعالى.

ويروى: أن سفيان كان يقول في كل موقف: اللهم لا تجعله آخر العهد منك، فلما كان العام الذي مات فيه، لم يقل شيئا، وقال: قد استحييت من الله -تعالى-.
