Question

Kindly verify the reference for the following Hadith:

“Ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) narrated that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) used to pray 20 rak’ahs of Tarawih by himself followed by Witr [every night] in the month of Ramadan.”

Answer

Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith.

“Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) used to perform 20 rak’ahs [of Tarawih] followed by witr, in the month of Ramadan, individually.”

(As Sunanul Kubra, vol. 2, pg. 496)

Imam Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah (rahimahullah) has recorded the Hadith with slight variation in the wording.

(Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 7774)

Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahullah) has declared a narrator weak. However, the Hadith is supported by the general practice of the Ummah. See a detailed article substantiating the practice of 20 rak’ahs of Tarawih here.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
