Is this a du’a to read in ‘Arafah?

Allahumma lakal hamdu kallathi naqulu wa khayram mimma naqulu, Allahumma laka salati wa nusuki wa mahyaya wa mamati, wa ilayka ma-abi, wa laka rabbi turathi, Allahumma inni a’uzu bika min adhabil qabri wa waswasatis sadri wa shatatil amr, Allahumma inni a’uzu bika min sharri ma yajiu bihir rih

 

Answer

Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) recorded this Hadith and has declared it weak. Nevertheless, the du’a is suitable to recite as is the rule with Hadiths of this nature. In fact, Imam Ibn Khuzaymah (rahimahullah) also deemed the Hadith acceptable for practice despite its weakness.

Sayyiduna ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib  (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said that the du’a which Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) recited most frequently during the late afternoon while making wuquf at ‘Arafah was:

اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ الحَمْدُ كَالَّذِي نَقُولُ وَخَيْرًا مِمَّا نَقُولُ، اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ صَلَاتِي وَنُسُكِي وَمَحْيَايَ وَمَمَاتِي، وَإِلَيْكَ مَآبِي، وَلَكَ رَبِّ تُرَاثِي، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ القَبْرِ وَوَسْوَسَةِ الصَّدْرِ وَشَتَاتِ الأَمْرِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا يَجِيءُ بِهِ الرِّيحُ

Transliteration: Allahumma lakal hamdu kalladhi naqulu wa khayram mimma naqul. Allahumma laka Salati wa nusuki wa mahyaya wa mamati wa ilayka ma-abi, wa laka Rabbi turathi. Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min ‘adhabil qabri wa was wasatis sadri wa shatatil amr. Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min sharri ma yaji-u bihir rih

Translation: O Allah! To You belongs all praise, as we have expressed and far better than we express! O Allah, my Salah, my worship, my life, and my death are all for You alone. To You is my final return, and all that I possess belongs to You. O Allah, I seek Your protection from the punishment of the grave, from the evil whispers within the heart, and from my affairs falling into disorder. O Allah, I seek Your protection from the harm that the wind may bring.

سنن الترمذي
(٣٥٢٠) – حدثنا محمد بن حاتم المؤدب قال: حدثنا علي بن ثابت قال: حدثني قيس بن الربيع، وكان من بني أسد، عن الأغر بن الصباح، عن خليفة بن حصين، عن علي بن أبي طالب، قال: أكثر ما دعا به رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم عشية عرفة في الموقف: «اللهم لك الحمد كالذي نقول وخيرا مما نقول، اللهم لك صلاتي ونسكي ومحياي ومماتي، وإليك مآبي، ولك رب تراثي، اللهم إني أعوذ بك من عذاب القبر ووسوسة الصدر وشتات الأمر، اللهم إني أعوذ بك من شر ما يجيء به الريح».: هذا حديث غريب من هذا الوجه وليس إسناده بالقوي.

صحيح ابن خزيمة:
باب ذكر الدعاء على الموقف عشية عرفة إن ثبت الخبر، ولا أخال إلا أنه ليس في الخبر حكم، وإنما هو دعاء، فخرجنا هذا الخبر وإن لم يكن ثابتا من جهة النقل إذ هذا الدعاء مباح أن يدعو به على الموقف وغيره.
(٢٨٤١) – روى قيس بن الربيع، عن الأغر، عن خليفة بن حصين، عن علي قال: كان أكثر دعاء رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بعشية عرفة: «اللهم لك الحمد كالذي نقول وخيرا مما نقول اللهم لك صلاتي ونسكي ومحياي ومماتي وإليك مآبي، ولك ربي ترائي اللهم إني أعوذ بك من عذاب القبر ووسوسة الصدر وشتات الأمر، اللهم إني أسألك من خير ما تجيء به الريح، وأعوذ بك من شر ما تجيء به الريح» ثناه يوسف بن موسى ثنا عبد الله بن موسى عن قيس بن الربيع.
