A Hadith Cited as Proof for Waqfun Nabi in an Ayah of Surah Al ‘Imran

Question

This narration suggests that there was a stop at ta-wilih, as Sayyidah ‘Aishah read up to here while transmitting this Hadith instead of reading the complete ayah or stopping at an earlier place. One reason may be that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) made waqf at this place before continuing his recitation till the end of the ayah.

Can the above Hadith be used as proof for Waqfun Nabi at وابتغاء تأويله?

Answer

The above Hadith recorded in several Hadith books. The version in question is recorded in Sahih Bukhari.

Sayyidah ‘Aishah (radiyallahu ‘anha) said: “Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) recited this verse:

{هو الذي أنزل عليك الكتاب منه آيات محكمات هن أم الكتاب وأخر متشابهات فأما الذين في قلوبهم زيغ فيتبعون ما تشابه منه ابتغاء الفتنة وابتغاء تأويله}

‘He is the One Who revealed to you the Book. In it are verses that are clear and decisive; they are the mother of the Book, while others are ambiguous. As for those in whose hearts is deviation, they pursue that which is ambiguous from it, seeking discord and thereby seeking to distort its interpretation…’

up to the words:

{إلا أولو الألباب} [آل عمران: ٧]

‘…and only the people of understanding take heed.’

Sayyidah ‘Aishah then said that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: ‘When you see those who follow that which is ambiguous from it, then they are the ones whom Allah has named, so beware of them.’”

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 4547)

The apparent stop at وابتغاء تأويله in this particular wording does not necessarily indicate that the stop was from Sayyidah ‘Aishah (radiyallahu ‘anha), or Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam). It may merely be an abbreviation by one of the narrators or the compiler of the Hadith book.

This is supported by another transmission (riwayah) of Sahih Bukhari; the transmission of Imam Abu Dharr Al-Harawi (rahimahullah), in which the verse appears in full.

(Refer: Footnotes of Sahih Bukhari, Sultaniyyah edition; print of Shaykh Zuhayr Nasir)

Furthermore, Imam Muslim (rahimahullah) and others have recorded the same Hadith with the entire verse quoted in full.

(Refer: Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2665, Musnad Ahmad, vol. 6, pg. 256, Hadith: 26197)

Hence, it is difficult to establish, based on this Hadith, that there is a waqfun nabi at وابتغاء تأويله.

Note: I have merely discussed whether the above Hadith may be used to establish this particular waqf. For further details, refer to a reputable scholar in the field of Qira-ah.

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
