Question

Is this a Hadith?

Answer

The words in question are not a Hadith. Rather, they are the words of a well known Sufi from Baghdad, Abu Sa‘id Ahmad ibn ‘Isa Al-Kharraz (rahimahullah) (demise: 277 A.H.), as cited by Imam Qushayri (rahimahullah).

(Ar Risalatul Qushayriyyah, pg. 558)

Below is the translation with brief explanatory notes:

Abu Sa’id Al-Kharraz (rahimahullah) said: “When Allah Ta‘ala intends to draw one of His servants close to Him [i.e. to make him a wali], He opens for him the door of His remembrance. When he begins to find sweetness in remembrance, Allah opens for him the door of nearness. Then [when he continues in the remembrance of Allah with his heart and tongue] he raises him to the stations of extreme spiritual closeness [where the servant finds delight in being alone with Allah, away from creation].

Then, [when he becomes firmly established in this], He seats him upon the seat of Tawhid [meaning: his heart sees none but Allah, because of being fully occupied with Him], Then, [when this continues], He removes the veils from him [meaning: the distractions arising from the desires of the nafs etc.], and He admits him into the abode of absolute focus upon Allah [meaning: that he sees none but Allah, the One], and He unveils to him Majesty and Greatness [so the servant reveres and magnifies Allah].

Then, when his gaze falls upon the Majesty and Greatness, he remains [with Allah], without himself, [meaning: forgetful of himself in his remembrance of Allah]. At that point, the servant becomes powerless and loses all sense of self [meaning: he becomes unaware of himself because he is completely absorbed in Allah’s Majesty and Greatness], He then falls under Allah Ta‘ala’s protection, and becomes free from the claims and pretensions of his nafs [because of his being absent from and unaware of himself, and being totally focused on Allah Ta‘ala.].
