Is this a Hadith of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)?

بئس الزاد إلى المعاد العدوان على العباد

 

Answer

I have not come across this as a Hadith of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam). This has been reported as the statement of Imam Fudayl ibn ‘Iyad (rahimahullah) and Imam Shafi’i (rahimahullah) and should be quoted as such.

Imam Fudayl ibn ‘Iyad (rahimahullah) and Imam Shafi’i (rahimahullah) said: “How evil a provision for the Hereafter is transgression against [Allah’s] servants.”

A similar message is found in the following Hadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam):

“Do you know who the bankrupt person is?” The Sahabah replied, “A bankrupt person among us is one who has neither dirhams nor any possessions.” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, “The [real] bankrupt person from my Ummah is the one who will come on the Day of Qiyamah with Salah, fasting and Zakah, but he had abused someone, slandered another, unlawfully consumed someone’s wealth, shed another’s blood and struck others. His good deeds will then be given to those whom he wronged. If his good deeds are exhausted before he has repaid them, their sins will be placed upon him, and he will then be thrown into the Fire.”

صحيح مسلم:
(٢٥٨١) – حدثنا قتيبة بن سعيد، وعلي بن حجر، قالا: حدثنا إسماعيل وهو ابن جعفر، عن العلاء، عن أبيه، عن أبي هريرة، أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، قال: «أتدرون ما المفلس؟» قالوا: المفلس فينا من لا درهم له ولا متاع، فقال: «إن المفلس من أمتي يأتي يوم القيامة بصلاة، وصيام، وزكاة، ويأتي قد شتم هذا، وقذف هذا، وأكل مال هذا، وسفك دم هذا، وضرب هذا، فيعطى هذا من حسناته، وهذا من حسناته، فإن فنيت حسناته قبل أن يقضى ما عليه أخذ من خطاياهم فطرحت عليه، ثم طرح في النار».
