What is the status of the following narration?

من عض على شبدعه، سلم من الآثام

 

Answer

This statement has been cited as a Hadith in some works on Gharibul Hadith and in other secondary sources. However, I have not come across an authentic chain of transmission for it.

In an Nihayah fi Gharibil Hadith, this has been cited as an idiom/expression. ‘Allamah Muhammad Tahir Al Fatani has likewise cited it as an idiom.

Translation:

Whoever bites [i.e. restrains] his tongue, will be safe from sins.

(أثم)
– فيه «من عض على شبدعه سلم من الأثام» الأثام بالفتح الإثم، يقال أثم يأثم أثاما. وقيل هو جزاء الإثم.

(هـ) فيه «من عض على شبدعه سلم من الآثام» أي على لسانه. يعني سكت ولم يخض مع الخائضين، ولم يلسع به الناس، لأن العاض على لسانه لا يتكلم.

مجمع بحار الأنوار: (١٧٣/٣)
[شبدع] فيه: «من عض على شبدعه سلم من الآثام»، أي على لسانه، أي سكت ولم يخض مع الخائضين ولم يلسع به الناس، وهو في الأصل العقرب. غ: شبه بها اللسان.

مجمع الأمثال: (٣١٥/٢)
(٤٠٩٦)- من ‌عض ‌على ‌شبدعه أمن الآثام.
أي من عض على لسانه أمن عقوبة الإثم وجزاءه.
